Hurricane Katrina is one of the 5 deadliest hurricanes on record in United States history. It's the sixth stongest hurricane among recorded Atlantic based storms.
PATH: Katrina formed in the bahamas on August 23, 2005 before moving over southern tip of Florida as a category 1 Hurricane. Katrina then moved quickly into the Gulf of Mexico and strengthened into a catgeory 5 hurricane with winds in excess of 170 mph. The storm weakened just before landfall again on August 30, 2005 in southeast Louisiana causing massive destruction along the Gulf Coast from central Florida into Texas.
